Strengthening Connections Across the North Shore

Refining an Established Presence

Mamaweswen, The North Shore Tribal Council, represents seven First Nations along the North Shore of Lake Huron within the Robinson-Huron Treaty area. Mamaweswen is responsible for supporting these communities with governance, administration, and community programs.

Despite its strong presence, Mamaweswen faced challenges in communication and brand consistency, leading the tribal council to partner with Indigenous Marketing on a comprehensive strategy to improve engagement and refine their visual identity. IMS travelled to the North Shore to meet with stakeholders, experience the local culture firsthand, and converse with community members. These discussions revealed key challenges, including a brand that was difficult to utilize.

The solution was to adapt Mamaweswen’s branding to current design standards, while maintaining recognizable elements to ensure continuity without a full rebrand. The refreshed logo maintains the core symbolism of the original design—a thriving tree with roots representing Mamaweswen’s seven member nations, encased in a medicine wheel.

IMS also updated the typography, defined brand colours, and introduced supporting graphic elements derived from the logo to create a more cohesive brand identity.

Alongside the visual identity refresh, IMS developed a comprehensive communications plan tailored to Mamaweswen’s needs. This included key messaging, communication channel guidelines, and a strategic social media plan to enhance engagement with both internal and external audiences.

Building lasting relationships together

Additionally, IMS provided templates for business cards, letterheads, and presentations, ensuring consistent branding across all materials.

The immediate impact of the project was tangible—Mamaweswen staff quickly implemented the new branding on business cards, building signage, and program materials. The cohesive identity strengthened the organization’s presence and clarified its role within the community.

By balancing modern design principles with cultural respect, IMS helped Mamaweswen move forward with a refreshed brand that honours its history while setting the stage for future growth. This collaboration not only strengthened Mamaweswen’s identity but also reinforced its commitment to serving and uniting its member First Nations.
